Hey, it’s Jack!

It starts with one file saved to the desktop. Then another. And another. Before you know it, you’re staring at 47 icons, half-named PDFs, and something called “final_version_v4_NEW_EDIT”.

We’ve all been there. But a cluttered digital workspace doesn’t just look messy — it slows you down and makes it harder to focus.

This week, we’re kicking off the Digital Declutter series with a simple, satisfying step: clearing the digital decks.

In this edition of On The Pulse:

  • Getting on top of file chaos

  • Looking forward to Galaxy Unpacked

  • Microsoft’s big layoffs

Let’s get started!

📰 NEWS

  • Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event lands today, with plenty of hype around the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 — both tipped for big upgrades in display size, AI features and slimmed-down designs. We’re also expecting new Galaxy Watch 8 models (including a possible “Ultra” version), a glimpse at the long-rumoured tri-fold Galaxy G Fold, and maybe even another tease of its Apple Vision Pro rival, Project Moohan. It’s all shaping up to be Samsung’s most ambitious hardware lineup yet — though the real win would be keeping prices steady. Personally, I’m keen to see if any of this actually pushes the needle in the increasingly saturated foldables market.

  • Microsoft is laying off 9,000 employees — about 4% of its global workforce — as it continues streamlining for the AI era, following earlier cuts this year totalling over 6,000 jobs. The move, aimed at flattening management layers and reallocating resources to AI, comes despite booming financials: $26 billion in profit last quarter and rising shares. While this restructuring might sharpen Microsoft’s competitive edge in AI, it’s a stark reminder that even record profits won’t protect jobs in today’s tech landscape. It’s efficient capitalism — but undeniably ruthless.

DEEP DIVE

💯 Clean up your digital workspace

Clearing your digital workspace is pretty easy; here’s a quick action plan.

🖥 Tidy up your desktop and Downloads folder

Start small:

  • Move any files you still need to a proper folder.

  • Delete everything you don’t. Be honest.

  • Empty your Recycle Bin (yes, really).

Then open your Downloads folder and do the same. Set a reminder to check it weekly.

💡 Bonus tip: You can change your browser settings so downloads go to a folder of your choice, not just the black hole of Downloads.

📁 Organise OneDrive and SharePoint

If you’re using OneDrive or SharePoint but still digging for files, it’s time to make folders that work for you.

  • Keep folder names short but clear — avoid “New Folder (3)”

  • Use dates where helpful: Invoices 2024, Reports Q1

  • Stick to one layer of subfolders if you can. Going 5 folders deep won’t help you find anything faster

💡 Pin your most-used folders in OneDrive so they’re always one click away.

📝 Use simple naming conventions

The goal is easy-to-scan filenames that help you know what’s inside without opening the file. A few ideas:

  • Use underscores or dashes instead of spaces (Project_Plan_April or Meeting-Notes-2024)

  • Add the date or version at the end, like Proposal_v2.docx

  • Skip words like “final” — they’re rarely final

💡 Tip: Agree on a simple file naming rule with your team to avoid duplicate files and confusion.

Less mess, more headspace

A tidy workspace — digital or physical — makes it easier to think clearly and work efficiently. You don’t need colour-coded folders or a perfect system. Just make it easy to find what you need, when you need it.

📢 Next week: We’ll tackle the inbox. If Outlook is starting to feel like a second job, you won’t want to miss it.

Feeling brave? Send us a screenshot of your before-and-after desktop. No judgement, we promise.
